Should technology rules be part of a parenting plan?

On Behalf of | Mar 3, 2026 | Child Custody and Visitation

Technology often plays a major role in modern parenting. Adults may rely on various types of devices, including smart home devices and nanny cameras, to ensure their children’s safety. Parents also regulate when and how their children use technology.

Parents may find themselves disagreeing on issues such as whether their children should use social media and what types of video games they can play. Addressing technology in a parenting plan can be a smart move for parents who want to limit opportunities for co-parenting conflict.

What rules does the family require?

The age of the children in the family directly influences what type of technology rules the parents need to establish. Especially when children are young, shared standards regarding overall screen time and what types of games, websites or apps the children can use are of the utmost importance for consistency.

As children mature, parents may need to have standards in place regarding when they can have their own phones and when they can join different social media platforms. They may also need to have agreed-upon rules regarding when parents can restrict access to technology or social media as a punishment for misconduct. Additionally, parents may want to clarify what types of technology they can use to interact with their children while they are with the other parent.

Parenting plans that address the various modern uses of technology in parenting and by children can help them make rules consistent for their children, ensure regular communication with their kids and optimize their use of technology for healthy development. Taking the time to address common issues in a parenting plan can limit future opportunities for conflict.
