Tips for divorcing a narcissist

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2022 | Divorce

Divorce is stressful in any capacity. However, if you are engaged in a divorce with a narcissist, it’s not uncommon to face unique issues and situations that others don’t.

Because of the actions and methods used by a narcissistic person, it’s imperative to take steps to protect yourself. Some tips to help you get through a divorce with a narcissist can be found here.

Document everything

The goal of a narcissist is to “win” and be proven right in the divorce process. They will do anything to achieve these goals. This includes twisting your words, encounters and more.

Because of this, it’s a good idea to document every interaction you have with them. This includes face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and more. Write down where and when it happened, what was said and any other details. If you pay for anything related to the narcissist, be sure to keep receipts or documents showing this.

Prepare yourself

As mentioned above, divorcing a narcissist means that they will do anything to feel like they won. Because of this, they may argue with every statement you make and the compromise you suggest. It’s best to prepare yourself for a lengthy and expensive process.

Don’t engage with them

The more you engage with the narcissist, argue with them and give their statements or efforts attention, the more you are giving “fuel to the fire.” It’s best to avoid engaging with them as much as possible. Consider going through a friend or even your legal representative if communication is necessary.
