Social Life After Your California Divorce

In our last post, we talked about how important is to build a robust, loving social support network during and after a California divorce. We offered two long-term strategies:

#1. Find and add great people to your social network.

#2. Subtract out people who are mean to you and who are holding you back.

Here are two other general guidelines about what to do:

Virtual relationships can be great, but they are not adequate substitutes for “real” relationships.

You might have a lot of friends on Facebook or on online forums that you frequent. But research suggests that you need regular human contact to stay healthy and feel connected. If you’re getting too dependent on Facebook and other social media, limit your time online and simultaneously force yourself to attend in person events and communicating with real people.

Take care of yourself, physically and emotionally

During the divorce, you may be so consumed by frustration and anger over the process – as well as overwhelmed by work, child care and general “life” – that you may neglect to care of your body, mind and soul. If you fix this problem, you may find yourself spontaneously more interested in connecting with people and expanding your social circle.

For instance, consider cutting out refined carbohydrates and sugars from your diet and adding in more healthy vegetables, whole protein and good sources of fat. Get adequate sleep every night and consider throwing a “power nap” into the mix. Engage in a safe, effective exercise plan. Soothe your mind by getting counseling or doing regular meditation.
